Tenth Annual California Authors Night
Produced by the Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park
District
in cooperation with the CWC, Mt. Diablo Branch. Three performers will
portray
these authors, revealing their struggles, successes, and those who
influenced
them.
M.F.K. Fisher
In a career spanning more than 60 years, she wrote
hundreds
of stories for The New Yorker as well as 15 books of essays and
reminiscences,
a novel, a screenplay, a book for children and dozens of travelogues.
She
used food as a cultural metaphor. Her books include The
Gastronomical
Me, Here Let Us Feast and Dubious Honors.
She will be performed by local writer, Pat
Edwards
who has done one-woman shows featuring Gertrude Stein, Helen Hunt
Jackson,
Lillian Hellman, Gertrude Atherton and Jessica Mitford.
Herb Caen
Pulitzer Prize-winning San Francisco newspaper
columnist
Herb Caen wrote 16,000 columns, each with 22 individual items,
separated
by his trademark three dots. During the McCarthy era, the FBI kept
close
tabs on him. Caen was an accomplished drummer, who performed into his
80's.
David
Pinkham, a local theater performer, will portray Caen.
Pinkham
has portrayed Joaquin Miller, Dashiell Hammett, and William Saroyan for
past Authors Nights.
Mary Hallock Foote
As she moved with her husband from one Western mining
camp to another, she wrote twelve novels and four volumes of short
stories.
However, modern readers know her better as the main character in
Wallace
Stegner's Pulitzer-prize winning novel, Angle of Repose.
Beverly Lauderdale will portray
Foote.
Lauderdale is an accomplished writer and teacher. She has portrayed
Mary
Austin, Kathleen Norris, and Jessmyn West, in past years.
March 14th , 7:00 pm. $8 per person. Proceeds will
be
donated to the annual CWC Mt. Diablo Branch Young Writers Contest for
Contra
Costa Middle School Students.
